How to Learn SEO

Learning SEO can be a minefield of myths, misleading information and techniques that may actually harm your SEO rather than help it.

So where can you go for advice or help whilst learning SEO? The first port of call we recommend is a simple book on the subject!  Some people say it’s impossible to write a book on SEO as when the book’s published it’s out of date as search engines are ever-changing their algorithms.  This is false, the main ranking factors from 3 years ago in Google for instance are still the same ... Improve your landing pages to improve your SEO

People searching with Google may click on a search result, not like the look of the site and then go back to Google again to visit another site on the search results.  If this happens regularly then the first site in the results isn’t as useful to surfers and it will lose some ranking power in Google.

Google are on a never ending mission to provide the best results for any keyword searched for by their users.  Naturally a site that many people bounce off (a site they enter and exit without viewing a second page) shouldn’t rank as highly as ... (Read more)

Check your broken links for search spiders

Every search engine (apart from search directories) uses programs called “spiders” to crawl whole websites and grab all the relevant data they can from each page.

The spider will enter the homepage of a website and then follow every link it comes across in the code after saving the content.  It will then crawl each page linked from the homepage and keep repeating the process until it has found every single page on the entire website.

An XML Sitemap is a good way to tell the search spiders exactly where all ... (Read more)

robots.txt – What not to do

Warning – the “robots.txt” file can destroy whole website’s search rankings!

The “robots.txt” file is a small text file on a website’s main root that tells search engine spiders how to interact with the site.  Our “robots.txt” file allows any search engine spider (from Google, Bing, AOL, Yahoo etc.) to crawl every webpage of our site and use the pages in the search engine results.  Also the file importantly tells spiders where to find a website’s XML Sitemap; this is a list of all the URL’s on a site and makes sure ... Removing Future Risk in SEO

Google shifts and changes it’s search engine algorithm on a daily basis, most changes are minute but now and then upto 10% of websites see massive changes in their rankings and some businesses are crippled by it.  Some people get understandably very angry if they lose 90% of their traffic whereas others say they deserved the punishment by Google due to borderline SEO and copyright practices.

Without really going hard on SEO it’s impossible to achieve number 1 rankings without an amazing (and usually expensive) PR or viral effort.  You can be too ... (Read more)

Conversion Optimisation – The Cheap Way To Increase Profits

Many companies are pouring literally tens of thousands of pounds into online advertising, PR, SEO and offline advertising.

Instead of battling against time and competition companies could simply concentrate on making the site sell more products per visitor.  The conversion rate of a site is the percentage of people who do a desired action on a website such as buying a product, filling out a form or calling a telephone number for example.

There are many web design choices that can deter people from spending time on a website or from buying ... (Read more)

How to Ruin Your SEO Efforts – Copied Content

Let’s face it, writing content for websites for most is a labourious & boring task!

If your employer sold for example cardboard boxes or reems of A4 paper your blog/news-page could be very, very boring and the temptation to cut corners would be massive.

Many people cut corners when it comes to SEO work, they may pay for links, steal content or pass the work over to a third party.  Stealing content is probably the worst way to cut corners with SEO as it’s so plain and clear to search engines such as Google ... (Read more)

Using Synonyms for SEO

When thinking about the main keywords you want to aim for with SEO you should also consider synonyms.

Synonyms are words that relate to other words; these related words can sometimes be inter-changeable.  Google loves related content but can spot an obviously keyword stuffed webpage which keeps mentioning the same word again and again and again in an un-natural fashion.

You can use synonyms to make sure a webpage is targeted around your main keyword without flagging up the page for any spam reports.

Firstly open up a Thesaurus and enter your ... (Read more)
