Hiding Your SEO

If you have performed bad, unethical or black hat SEO on another person’s website then you may want to hide your SEO work in case they ever find out.

The trouble with the internet (or perhaps the beauty of it) is that everything online can be seen by anyone in the world.  There are bots out there every second of every day crawling web pages and gather data such as content, links and media.

Hiding your back-links is impossible due to the openness of the internet, it’s the same as trying to protect any images or text from being stolen on a website, it cannot be done.  Many SEO companies (and there are a lot of them out there) rely on the fact that their customers will not figure out that all they have done is a handful of social bookmarks, 20 or so directory listings and one or two forum signatures.

Some people argue that deliberately creating backlinks on other people’s websites is an “unethical” way of performing SEO.  Surprisingly one look at any multi-million pound online company shows that they have thousands of these links, the old saying goes “nice guys finish last“!

In an ideal world everyone would play fair online and just create great content, make virals and use PR to entice visitors to the site.  Unfortunately someone very quickly realised that if Google favored sites with more inbound links then they would play the system and create a network of sites that all pointed to their site.

You cannot hide your SEO but you can explain to people why you have done certain things and how it benefits their site.  If you start breaking key rules in Google’s Webmaster Guidelines then this could not only get you in trouble from a website owner but also get the website removed from Google’s index completely!

Gone are the days where you can do a quick fix and win lots of traffic, if you are hiding your search engine optimisation techniques or spending time performing black hat SEO then one day you will be caught as everything you do is now transparent online.
