Be responsive and improve mobile SEO
Posted by admin on July, 2nd 2012Mobile web is changing rapidly, and it’s vital you’re able to keep up if you want to give users the best possible experience. Google recently identified responsive mobile design as the best option to achieve maximum SEO success, and if you do it well you could reap the rewards.

Responsive web design is all about creating a website that works on desktop as well as mobile screens—style sheets can be designed to look one way on a big screen and can automatically reshape themselves to fit smaller screens, with features being as simple or as sophisticated as necessary. The site will look different on different devices (and therefore to different users) but the URLs and coding will always be the same, ensuring each user gets the same experience no matter what device is chosen.
The challenge, then, is to create a website that’s just as functional on a mobile device as it is on a big screen. Visually this shouldn’t be an issue—although the changes will be significant, the style sheet can accommodate them—but it’s with coding that you’ll have to start looking a little deeper. Trying to pack everything from a desktop site onto a mobile version can be tricky as it’ll take much longer to download (and people could easily get bored and give up), so you’ll probably want to slim things down a bit.
Look at ways to resize images, for example, consolidate external files and clean up your style sheet at a macro level—anything that can reduce loading time onto a smaller screen will be well worth considering, and as an added bonus it’ll speed up the desktop experience too. It’s all about creating a site that satisfies both desktop and mobile users, with responsive design ensuring your mobile SEO endeavours will pay off.
