Google Trends – Seasonal and Yearly Changes in Online Searches

Seasonal Changes

Fur Coats in Summer?!  Google trends allows you to see the trend of online searches whether it be a monthly change or a yearly change.

Let’s say you were starting up a brand new site and wanted to maximise your SEO efforts.  Any new domain takes at least 2/3 months to rank highly for a keyword so if you were to sell “sunglasses” for example then you’ll be entering the market in the Autumn months!

Below is an example of seasonal changes with the keywords “sunglasses” and “coats“:

Seasonal Changes of "Sunglasses" and "Coats" in the UK
This clearly shows that sunglasses are most popular online during April and coats are most popular online at Christmas time.  As you’d expect the amount of searches for coats drops in the summer when sunglasses are searched for a lot; these two searches have a clear seasonal trend and that must be considered when looking at a website’s traffic reports.

Yearly Changes

Using ‘Google Trends’ to find yearly changes in online searches brings up some very interesting results sometimes.

Real Web SEO believe that Magento is the perfect platform for ecommerce due to its easy content management system and the ability to write ideal URL’s for every product which is a great SEO benefit.

Let’s look at how “Magento” is trending against it’s main competitor “OScommerce” (the system behind .aspx websites):

This trend shows that Magento wasn’t around before 2008 and OScommerce is becoming less and less popular!  Luckily for Real Web SEO, other people have spotted the value of Magento Websites and there is a growing community in that area.

So have a play around with Google Trends and see what you discover in your chosen field; you may find a new market to enter or alarmingly find out your field is dying out, good luck!
