Working around the clock with the development team from Juno, we settled on an information architecture that satisfied customers, search engines and Graham and Green themselves.  Although G&G’s products are categorised, a robust, dynamic system of URL rewrites in Magento were used to give each collection of products center stage along with permanent links from the drop-down navigation bar.

The website is centered around the well known London brand and has a significant amount of affiliate traffic, this gives the Graham and Green website a lot of natural in-bound links which in turn pass power on to the category pages and specially made specific landing pages.

One range of products spread across many categories was Shabby Chic Furniture, a type of ‘worn’ looking, wooden furniture with a distinctive rustic style.  Without making any copies of the products (which could lead to stock level issues), Magento fortunately allows you to use the same products in different categories.  We used this advantage to create a ‘Shabby Chic’ landing page on the site with a collection of the products that matched the ‘Shabby Chic’ description. Each product with our on-site SEO architecture only has one URL with a dynamic bread-crumb trail for user accessibility.  Without a key landing page for these products there would be no way for a visitor to see the entire collection without skipping from category to category such as ‘furniture’, ‘beds’ and ‘stools’.

A key ingredient to getting specific landing pages to rank well in search engines is to include some fresh, quality content alongside them to ensure the main keyword is mentioned on the page and there’s enough juicy content for the search engines to sink their teeth into.  Internal links and off-site SEO towards each page can also boost landing pages, ensure that they are also included in the XML sitemap and have the page title focused on the main keyword.

Getting landing pages out as soon as possible helps the pages to mature in Google (a small ranking factor) and allows them to gain natural links and hopefully some valuable traffic.  Going overboard with non-quality landing pages can have negative effects with Google (see the farmer update) so don’t go overboard.

Note: With a famous brand known for it’s quality, Graham and Green receives a lot of highly traffic either directly or from people searching for “graham and green” online.  Whilst gaining more online traffic for our client it’s also important for us to perform conversion optimisation to ensure that as many sales are made per visitor as possible.  Slow loading times or a confusing shopping cart are examples of what could  be holding back valuable sales.  Checking Google Analytics for any obvious conversion leaks should be your first port of call and once happy you should continue to split test the site to squeeze every little improvement out of it as you can.
